Abstract

Objective: to understand the pneumococcal vaccination coverage in the population over 64 years of age in A Coruña, and to analyse its degree of suitability according to the indications of the vaccination schedule by the SERGAS.

Method: a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study, with A Coruña as study setting. There was a selection through stratified sampling by primary care centres of 202 persons over 64 years of age; their electronic clinical records were analysed in order to determine whether to administer or not pneumococcal vaccines based on their age and risk factors. The level of adequacy of their vaccination status was reviewed according to the indications by the SERGAS. Data were analysed using the SPSS statistical package.

Results: 59.4% received one of the pneumococcal vaccines. However, complete coverage with VPnP23 and VPnC13 was 9.4%. The vaccine coverage for VPnC13 was 16.8%, and higher in the groups with lower age, while coverage for VPnP23 was 42.6%. In terms of comorbidities, a positive tendency was observed among patients with multiple risk factors. The level of adequacy for the VPnC13 vaccine was 58.8%, and 94,2% for the VPnP23 vaccine.

Conclusions: even though both vaccines are reimbursed by public funds and indicated in the vaccination schedule, there is a much higher administration of VPnP23 than of VPnC13. The suitability of VPnP23 reaches almost the totality, while that of VPnC13 exceeds slightly half of the total.
