Abstract
Objective: tobacco kills up to half of the persons who smoke. In 2020, 22.3% of the world population used tobacco. In 2019, Spain was placed as the ninth country in the EU with the highest percentage of smokers. The objective of this study was to locate, organize and summarize the information from systematic reviews dealing with brief interventions for smoking cessation in adult smokers at Primary Care that have been published so far.
Method: an umbrella review including systematic reviews that analysed brief interventions for smoking cessation. For this aim, seven electronic databases were consulted: Cochrane Library, SciELO, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect (Elsevier) and Google Scholar.
Results/Conclusion: in total, 2,366 records were retrieved. After eliminating duplicates and screening the documents according to the selection criteria determined, 27 systematic reviews in total were finally included. Brief interventions represent the most common methods, and they are effective for smoking cessation. However, there is a reduction in their efficacy when compared with other type of interventions. The combination of interventions reinforces their effect on smoking cessation. Brief interventions represent a fast and cheap method that must be used opportunistically at the Primary Care practice in all smokers (whether they want to stop smoking or not).
