Abstract

Introduction: dance as therapy is a feasible option for physical activity in women, and causes positive effects on their self-concept, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. However, benefits are not clear in dance interventions under experimental designs.
Objective: to analyse the evidence available on dance interventions that demonstrate effects on cognitive variables in women.
Method: a systematic review according to the PRISMA guidelines in the Cuiden, PubMed, ScienceDirect, BVS, Cochrane, EBSCO-Host, Scielo, DBpia and CINAHL databases. The DeCS/MeSH key words were used as search strategy between the years 2025 in 2022, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and Korean. There was a selection of experimental designs that focused on cognitive variables in women.
Results: in total, 3,477 articles were identified; after eliminating duplicates and screening documents by title-abstract, six studies were included in the review. Two articles were clinical trials, two were pilot trials, and two were quasi-experimental studies. There were various types of dance: Zumba, Arabic Dance, Belly Dance, and Latin Dance. The duration of the intervention ranged between 8 and 16 weeks, with 2-3 weekly sessions and a 60-minute duration by session. The interventions caused significant changes in the experimental groups in the following variables: Body Image with Belly Dance (p= .037), Self-efficacy with Latin Dance (p= .044), Self-perception of Physical Strength with Zumba (p= .003), and Self-Esteem (p< .0001).
Conclusion: dance interventions for more than 8 weeks cause positive effects on the cognitive variables in women.
