Abstract

Introduction: breast cancer (BC) is one of the main causes of morbimortality in women in the world. It is essential to address the emotional aspects of this condition, which have been traditionally treated with medications; however, non-pharmacological therapies (NPTs) are not sufficiently addressed regardless of their potential. Objective: to describe the NPTs as support for depression and anxiety in women with BC conducted by health professionals during the past five years. Method: a systematic review under PRISMA guidelines, using the Cochrane, EBSCO, PubMed and Dialnet databases. DeCS/ MeSH descriptors were used, from 2019 to 2024, in four languages. Experimental articles with NPTs in women with BC were included. Out of 1,916 articles retrieved, six were selected for the final analysis: a controlled clinical trial and five systematic reviews. The TNFs included yoga, laughter therapy, music therapy, Tai Chi and aromatherapy. Results: two articles obtained high PRISMA scores: 74.07% and 77.77%. A randomized study obtained a 59.4% score according to the CONSORT guidelines. The NPTs which showed higher efficacy (95%) for depression and anxiety were those using music therapy and Tai Chi. Conclusions: even though studies presented limitations, they offered preliminary evidence of their efficacy on depression and anxiety. Further research is required, such as randomized clinical trials with rigorous design, in order to confirm these findings and optimize the interventions by health professionals, particularly nurses, who interact directly with women with BC and their caregivers.
