Abstract

Objective: to analyse the relationship between the level of knowledge on the effects of alcohol consumption with the patterns of consumption in university students. Method: a quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study, conducted in the City of Mexico with a final sample of 159 first-year Nursing students. An ad hoc questionnaire was used in order to evaluate knowledge and frequency, and AUDIT to determine the risk of alcohol consumption. Mann-Whitney’s U test and Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient (p< .05) were used for analysis. Results: a high prevalence was found of consumption at some points in their lives (95.6%), and excessive consumption during the last year (47.8%). Men showed a significantly higher prevalence of excessive use in all periods of time (e.g.: 62.5% vs. 41.4% during the last year; p= .015). A significant negative correlation was detected between consumption and knowledge (rs= –.160, p= .044), suggesting that the higher the consumption, the lower the knowledge. Those who did not report an excessive consumption during the last seven days had a significantly higher knowledge. Conclusions: there is a high prevalence of risk consumption; the male gender is the most affected by excessive consumption. Knowledge is negatively associated with consumption, suggesting that it is a protective factor. Nursing interventions should focus on closing specific knowledge gaps about limits of consumption per gender and neurological effects, in order to modify the perception of risk.
