Abstract

Objective: to describe the current framework of binge drinking in adolescents, and its driving factors, as well as to analyse the types of existing preventive interventions and how to achieve their effectiveness.
Method: a systematic review based on PRISMA methodology. A search of articles in English and Spanish was conducted including the last 10 years, in Medline, Scopus and Web of Science. The following MeSH terms were used: “Binge Drinking”, “Adolescent”, “Prevention and Control”, “Primary Prevention”, “Health Education”, integrating the Boolean operator AND. The CASPe program was used for critical review, in order to evaluate the methodological quality of different articles.
Results: 28 interventions were selected for the final analysis. According to the scope or means used, the following were differentiated: community interventions, technology-based programs and applications, school interventions, family interventions, or those conducted in health institutions. The key factors to consider that an intervention is effective for the reduction in excessive alcohol drinking were organized following the Health Determinants Model.
Conclusions: an effective intervention must include messages focused on the benefits of not drinking, based on theories of change in behaviour, to combine technology with intervention in the school setting, to use an approach based on social, family, coping and assertiveness skills, to consider social, behavioural and cultural factors, to integrate the family or community, and to be supported by political measures and legislation.
