Title:

Experience of a group nursing intervention in a Workshop on Back Problems

Abstract:

Group intervention in a workshop with people who manifested to have back pain led us to the question of whether their participation in this workshop did modify the number of consultations they had with medical professionals and whether these patients changed their consumption of medication.
We reviewed the medical records of 50 individuals participating in six workshops. A log was kept on the number of consultations in relation to the back pain one year before and then one year after the intervention, together with the type and amount of medicines taken.
The number of medical consultations dropped by a 61% and the number of nursing consultations by 87%. We were also able to verify that there had been a change regarding the consumption of medications, with a variance ranging from the previous use of anti-inflammatory agents to the use of analgesics after the workshop. Finally, we were able to verify that of the 50 patients 18 did not take medication before the workshop and that this number increased to 27 one year after this intervention.
We concluded that the group of patients who participated in the back pain workshop had had a change of attitude in their frequentation of medical consultations, there had been a decrease in the use of drugs in the less severe processes and a decrease in the use in anti-inflammatory agents, as well as a decrease in the total number of patients who did not take any medication.
