ABSTRACT
Having a child with a serious illness can be very stressful for parents, since they have to face overwhelming emotions in addition to other challenges. To offer health professionals a precise and user-friendly measure to detect different parental responses in face of the child’s illness, a brief version of the Parental Response Styles Questionnaire (CERP) was created.
Objective: To analyze the reliability and validity of a brief version of CERP (CERP-R) in a sample of parents of children and teenagers affected by chronic disease.
Methodology: Analysis of the psychometric characteristics of the reduced version of the CERP, which measures four factors: appathy/dysphoria, irritability/rejection, overprotection, and perception of maladjustment, were conducted. The sample was composed of 28 fathers and mothers who have a child with a chronic disease.
Results: The analysis of the brief version of CERP (CERP-R) showed a high internal consistency index. In regard to the measure’s global score there were no significant differences between fathers and mothers of the same couple. A comparison by factors indicated that the dysphoria/apathy responses are significantly higher in mothers, while overprotective responses were significantly higher among fathers.
Conclusion: CERP-R enables an assessment of different parental responses in faces of the child’s illness that both fathers and mothers may display. It is a reliable and valid instrument that may be used to measure different styles of parental response in order to plan interventions tailored to the needs of each family.
