Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: The radial artery is the access of choice when performing cardiac catheterization, a procedure indicated for the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery diseases. Despite complications such as vasospasm or arterial occlusion, this access is shown to be the one that offers the lowest number of complications. The aim of this study was to know the incidence of radial occlusion after performing cardiac catheterization in our workplace. The secondary aim was to establish possible relationships between the variables collected in the study and radial occlusion.
Material and Methods: Prospective descriptive study, with a sample of 93 consecutive patients from October 2015 to February 2016. The incidence of radial occlusion has been measured 30 days after cardiac catheterization by a modified Allen test and pulsioxymetry.
Results: An incidence of radial artery occlusion was observed in 7 patients (7.5%) 30 days after catheterization, and only the presence of dyslipidemia is statistically significant as a protective factor against radial occlusion.
Conclusion: The occlusion rate in different studies shows a wide range of results, between 1-30% depending on the studies, and it is therefore difficult to compare our results. It is certainly true that there are results around 1% in our environment with which we should compare ourselves so as to try to reduce this incidence.
Dyslipidemia as a protective factor against occlusion is not found in further studies analyzed, so it could be due to chance. In order to know it, it would be necessary to follow up a larger size sample.
