Abstract

Objective. To explore the triage carried out by nurses and the times of assistance to patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
Methodology. A panoramic review of original articles having been published in the last 10 years was carried out. The search strategy was designed using a standardized research question, format ECLIPSE, and its conversion into the Health Sciences Descriptors DeCS and MeSH. The main keywords were: acute coronary syndrome, unstable angina, myocardial infarction, chest pain, triage. The databases used were IBECS, SciELO, PubMed, CINAHL, CUIDEN plus and Google Scholar.
Results. The ACS patient‘s profile is a 60-year-old man with hypertension, dyslipidemia and smoker, presenting typical chest pain in 72% - 84.5 % of cases. The Manchester Triage System offers a sensitivity of
87.3 % - 44.60 % and a specificity of 91.3 % - 97.4%. The assignment of an adequate priority (I and II) ranges between 44.04 % and 87.9 %, with assistance times ranging between 20 and 28.6 minutes. Those factors that influence the subtriage are: atypical symptomatology in women and elderly patients, failures in the triage system, lack of training and of specific health care protocols, and failures related to the physical structure and the organizational system.
Conclusions. Nursing triage through a structured system may present an adequate sensitivity in the detection of ACS, despite certain external factors, such as the lack of training and of health care protocols, together with patient saturation and an improvable organizational flow.
