Abstract

Introduction. Acute myocardial infarction consists of the necrosis of the myocardial cells as a consequence of prolonged ischemia caused by the sudden reduction of the coronary blood supply. Diagnosis is based on the characteristics of the pain, pain localization and radiation, symptoms that may accompany the pain and the changes in the electrocardiogram. Usual treatment includes administration of morphine, oxygen, nitroglycerin and aspirin. Currently, however, the beneficial effects of oxygen in patients with acute myocardial infarction have been questioned. Objective. To analyse the adverse effects associated with oxygen administration in patients with myocardial infarction through a literature review.
Material and methods. A literature review of scientific articles dealing with the adverse effects associated with oxygen administration was carried out.
Results. 8 scientific articles were analysed, of which 1 was a review article, 2 trials, 1 editorial and 4 systematic reviews.
Conclusions. The evidence shows that oxygen therapy in patients with AMI with saturations above 90% may worsen the evolution of the disease in the medium to long term in addition to not leading to an improvement in the patient‘s acute clinical condition.
