Abstract

Objective: to describe the construction process of a Field Log Book, used to evaluate the clinical practices of nursing students at the URJC over six years.
Design: Descriptive, observational-longitudinal study.
Instrument: performance of audits to check the completion of the field logbook. Meetings with experts: semi structured satisfaction surveys administered to first year nursing students.
Results: from the analysis of the audits carried out over these years on the completion of the field logbook of the pupil, it is observed that a closed design prevents the active participation of the student in its own self-evaluation. The field log book subsequently adopted includes instructions on its completion written by the student and its implementation has proven useful for the student to deepen his or her knowledge on hospital practices.
Conclusions: the Field Log Book is a teaching tool that trains the student to use critical thinking. The difficult task of evaluating the practising student nurse is improved when the teacher performs a close follow-up of the pupil’ progress. The traditional dissociation between theory and practice is mitigated when there is a joint work line between the hospital and the university. It is necessary to design useful and user-friendly registries that avoid the evaluator’s subjectivity.
