Abstract

Nursing is a scientific discipline the main purpose of which is to care for people at times of disease and to help them enjoy a better quality of life and wellbeing. Nursing is based on its own set of knowledge, scientific theories, and a method of professional or scientific performance known as “Nursing Care Process” (NCP), which permits to diagnose and to assess the patient’s responses, the family’s or the community’s responses in the face of real or potential health problems. The work herein depicted is descriptive in nature and explains the main contributions of Virginia Henderson’s theory to the professional development of nursing in respect of the principal components of the nurse’s role and performance, the human needs involved, as well as the education and research in nursing. A theoretical model for the review of documentation on the study matter and qualitative procedures such as analysis, synthesis, induction and deduction, were used to reach the conclusions of the study. These conclusions are mainly related to the convenience of applying Virginia Henderson’s theory in the daily performance of nursing tasks, both in the provision of healthcare as well as in the field of research.
