Abstract

Objectives: to gain more insight into the quality of life of ostomised patients and analyse their care needs.
Methods: design of a mixed study combining quantitative methodology to assess the quality of life of ostomised patients and qualitative methodology to assess their care needs. Colostomy or ileostomy (80-90 in one year) candidates from the Puerta de Hierro Hospital in Madrid will be included. Variables: quality of life (SF-36 and STOMA-QUOL), sociodemographic variables, clinical variables and specific variables from the qualitative study. Procedure: the SF-36 questionnaire will be administered to the patients in the preoperative phase and again at 15 days, at 3 months and at 6 months after surgery. Additionally, patients who still have the stoma will respond to the STOMA-QUOL questionnaire in the 3 postoperative control visits. Participants selected for the qualitative study through theoretical sampling aimed at data collection, will be interviewed in depth. Analysis: Changes in quality of life scores before and after the study and factors associated with an improvement in quality of life will be assessed, together with an analysis of transcribed patient comments, definition of codes, subcategories and categories.
Applicability: better knowledge on the care needs of these patients will help to design operative strategies for care planning and better Health Education teaching.
