Abstract

In the year 2001 the Integral and Flexible Educational Model (IFEM) was implemented in the nursing degree of the University of Veracruz in Poza Rica.  We deemed important to learn about the opinion of the first nursing graduates to have been trained according to this method, given that it enables us to have a broader view of generations to come and to reduce the weaknesses and increase the strengths of the model.  Another objective is to identify transformations generated in healthcare provision, originated by labour and health system reform, in order to develop ideas that promote the nursing professional’s participation in the improvement of working conditions and the scientific level. 
The objective of graduate follow-up is to incorporate progress into the university’s institutional effectiveness by gathering and analysing information about graduates. 
The study was descriptive and cross-sectional, with a sample consisting of 10 graduates who completed their credit requirements in January 2006.  The sampling method used was non-probability purposive sampling. 
An instrument consisting of three sections that encompassed general information, work insertion and professional performance was applied.  Descriptive statistics were used for data processing.
In regards to theory and practical training, most graduates reported being satisfied with the training received during the course of their studies given that it had been very helpful in their professional performance.
