Abstract

One of the objectives of the European Space for Higher Education is learning throughout life. This reality leads us to take a new look into university education and training.  Innovation in the academic curricula and in the teaching methodology must foster reflexive learning and the acquisition of professional competences.
In this sense, the Sant Joan de Deu hospital nursing school is developing an internal transformation process in order to meet ESHE requirements by implementing new teaching methodologies in accordance with pedagogic approaches.

One of the innovations carried out is learning based on integrated cases (IC), which we have been  putting into practice for the last two years. This methodology is based on the integration of several subjects and on tutoring of limited-size groups shared by different members of the academic staff from different areas of knowledge. The IC approach is problem-based learning, thereby allowing the student to come face to face with the problem that needs to be resolved. IC aims to make students work with professional competences and learning objectives. We place special emphasis on team work and case resolution. We carry out a training, contextualised, shared, guided, integrated and critical  assessment.

By using IC methodology, we favour the participation and responsibility of students in their own learning and ensure the acquisition of a closer and deeper knowledge of the diversity of our students.
