Abstract

A study of educational intervention was carried out in the health area of the Teaching Polyclinic "José Martí Pérez" in Gibara from january 2007 to january 2008, with the aim to help improve the behaviour of the families in relation to their elderly relatives with mobility issues. The sample consisted of 67 families.
Variables such as family functioning, economic status, occupation, household environmental conditions and knowledge levels to perform the training were analyzed. In all cases they were given a survey and was subsequently organized and processed. Descriptive statistics were used as a percentage analysis and arithmetic mean.
The majority were moderately functional families (64,1%), 52,2% of the families had an extensive structure, in 64,6% of the cases the offspring were in charge of their elderly parents care, 95,5% were employed, and 47,7% had regular income.
Musculoskeletal diseases had a higher incidence in males 28,3%, objects in the way were the most representative cause, 62,6%, also the majority of homes were apt to carry out the training (85,0%). A survey was completed to assess the knowledge levels in relation to rehabilitation in the home: 71,6% had insufficient knowledge beforehand, subsequently the family participated in an educational program, with the outcome that 92,5% of them acquired the right skills. We believe that the training was effective, with a variation coefficient of 73,6% which suggests that intervention studies carried out with the family to help elderly and caregivers to cope with the aging process are beneficial.
