Abstract

Objective: to generate a substantive theory on the subjective experience of patients that face the process of a liver transplant, from their inclusion in the waiting list until six months after they have received the transplant.
Metodología: a multiple-method design of research that integrates qualitative and quantitative methodology. Prospective study with a six month patient follow-up after the transplant of all patients that are admitted in the waiting list and their care givers in four Madrid hospitals. The quality of life of the patients will be measured and the carer’s overload at different times throughout the process. Some patients will be selected by means of a theoretical sampling to deepen into the experience of the transplantation process through in-depth interviews. Inclusion criteria: patients over 18 included in the waiting list for a liver transplant in the study period. The carer that spends the most hours looking after the patient will be selected to accompany the patient to the medical offices. Exclusion criteria: patients that have zero urgency. Patients and carers with cognitive disorders. Patients and carers who cannot not communicate in Spanish. Analysis: quantitative data are analysed using descriptive statistical analysis, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and GEE-type lineal regression models (STATA 9 and SPSS 15.0). Qualitative data will be analysed following the methodological orientation of the Fundamental Theory. The results of both methods will be triangulated to explain the experience of patients that go through the transplantation process.
