Abstract

We carried out a descriptive research with the aim of improving our understanding of factors predisposing to protein-energy malnutrition in children, conducted in the Cañao, Barrio José Félix Ribas, zone 6, Petare community. The sample comprised of a total of 21 children diagnosed with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and their mothers, who received a questionnaire which contained items of interest for the study. The result was that the PEM was present more often in girls between 0 and 4 years of age with poorly educated mothers, and the most frequent type of malnutrition is the marasmic malnutrition associated to a maternal history of malnutrition and poor eating habits. All patients had associated diseases specially the dental decay and intestinal parasitism.
