Abstract

This paper is an extract from a thesis submitted for a degree of Master of Integral Care for Children and was presented at the Scientific Meeting of the No 4 Cuban Medical Brigade in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
It presents some views on pediatric work arising from the presence of pediatric patients with sickle cell anemia, an inherited condition that is common in populations of African origin although it is not limited to them. It is the result of an abnormality in the beta chain of adult hemoglobin (hemoglobin A) where the valine amino acid replaces the glutamic acid normally found at position six from the amino acid terminal.
