Abstract

According to psychologist Silvia Afanador the challenge of parenting in general is to provide their children with a series of elements, guidelines and values that help them behave and function in society. "The parents must lead the way in their children's lives”. We conducted research at an educational institution for children with disabilities, the half-boarding primary school Raúl de Aguiar, and the polyclinic Josué País García, with the aim to make public the experiences and actions of nurses with parents of children with mental retardation, using a cross sectional study. The sample consisted of 75 children enrolled in the center with intellectual disabilities and as a sample of 39 children with mental retardation studying in grades four through six. The primary data obtained through an approach to children and parents, and other complementary techniques was used. The results are expressed in tables. Although Ministry of Education has developed a methodological design for the care of children and families at educational institutions level, there is still a need for family training and actions to promote the roles of nurses in the community for the safe management of children at home, which will allow their proper insertion in society. Once the study has been completed, we intend to design a community education strategy "Home to Home" to the parents.
