Abstract

Objective: to analyze the characteristics, application criteria and effectiveness of the of external cephalic version (ECV) technique to a non-cephalic presentation.
Methodology: to conduct this review, information from the most important biomedical databases has been compiled: Medline, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, and Scirus. Qualitative screening of retrieved studies was performed using the CASPe critical appraisal tools.
Results: the most current scientific literature indicates that ECV is subject to compliance with the criteria for application, a useful technique in reducing costs, number of cesarean deliveries and morbidity and mortality of these and of vaginal breech delivery.
Conclusions: despite the apparent benefits of the technique, it requires further research on the course of labor after successful ECV. Similarly, efforts are needed in the development of specific protocols of action to guide the actions of the professional in the non-cephalic presentation.
