Abstract

The increase in chronic diseases has made that even the experts on the subjects are challenged with concepts related to the study of this phenomenon. When it comes to further investigation of chronic disease care, terms such as self-care, adherence and self-management, among others, are now common. But one can see the confusion in the literature and the indiscriminate use of terms that can lead even to believe that in reality they are not very useful. In order to make visible the contributions that nursing as a disciplinary science can give, one could ask oneself: What should nurses promote as the professional responsible for giving care? Promotion to adherence, encouraging self-care, or encouraging self-management?
