Abstract
The concept of quality has undergone a profound change to reach what is now known as Total Quality, also called Excellence. The historical concept of the word quality is the fitness or suitability for use. According to the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC), it is the set of characteristics of a product, process or service that bear on its ability to meet the needs of the user or customer.
The European Model for Business Excellence was developed in 1991 by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) in collaboration with numerous organizations both business and educative according to the Malcolm Baldrige models the United States and the Deming Award in Japan, as a framework for self-assessment of organizations and a basis for assessing applications to the European Quality Award. In 1999 and after a review process that lasted for two years, they presented the current version of which became known as the EFQM Excellence Model.
The overall objective of this study was to analyse a management system in a unit of a public hospital in the Valencian Community, incorporating the same principles and methodology to improve quality management, in order to gain a better use of resources, improved quality of care received by patients and increased satisfaction of workers in the unit.
