Abstract

Under the term "disorder of gender identity," trans-sexuality is currently considered a mental illness in current psychiatric manuals (DSM-IV).
This article studied via questionnaire the responses of 82 students of different nationalities, 39 of which were nursing students and 43 of other studies on trans-sexuality issues. The aim of this study is to determine the degree of knowledge of a specific population group (college students) about some of the terms used in the field of psychopathology to refer to trans-sexual identity, and their views on topics such as the gender reassignment operations or intersex states, and in this way, see if there are differences between the responses of nursing students and other students.
Two main hypotheses are proposed: 1) knowledge about some of the terms used in these areas will be the same in both groups, but 2) nursing students will show a more open attitude when asked about trans-sexuality issues.
Both hypotheses are confirmed, with certain exceptions. From all results obtained in the investigation it is concluded that there remains a clear lack of knowledge about many of the meanings of terms regarding trans-sexualism in science devoted to studying it and the male-female pairing when it comes gender begins to cease to be a constant between young people.
