Abstract

Tetanus is an often fatal infectious disease caused by a toxigenic extract of the bacillus Clostridium tetani. The disease is a public health problem in many parts of the world.
Protection against tetanus is antibody dependent and is achieved by active immunization (tetanus vaccination) or passive (tetanus-specific immunoglobulin).
Ideally, all individuals should receive a total of five doses of tetanus toxoid to provide protection over the years, possibly for life.
Even after many years, a primary vaccination or booster schedule should not be restarted, the schedule should be continued as it corresponds with the next dose. All doses received over the life of an individual must be registered in their vaccination card.
