Abstract

This essay is a product of a theoretical reflection on the results of research unto social representations of aging on healthcare and education professionals, which on one hand connect this stage of life with the old age, hold practices and training schemes legitimized by the lifestyle chosen by many people and, secondly, redefine their life paths. From this standpoint, it is recognized that the events at any time of life can cause a person to become aware of their need to excel, grow and transcend and finally, at the intersection of the two representations there is a person with legal rights who is invited to claim it, especially in the elderly age, as the corollary of singular and unique experiences that make human dignity. Paradoxes arise that invite reflection on this life stage, including the person who has possibilities for growth and self-transcendence although is near the end of its evolutionary process, or that death is necessary to generate life, both are needed and there is an inescapable polarity. Living differently is to venture to assume that our fate is to be creative, to be always the spearhead, with the boots on, to create and generate ways of dealing with different situations, not only from the personal aspect, but also in the collective adventure, we are all related in some way with everyone else, however, each has their own experiences. Reposition oneself to the representations on aging suggests ways to navigate life. "Reap what you sow" or "one gets old as it has lived" are some of the expressions that invite us to think how the person lives.
