Abstract

The necessity of writing this article arises from the existence of some controversy between two different distinct positions. The clear and irrefutable fact that people who drink regularly are at high risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer of various kinds, and the position that argues that low-alcohol beverages such as beer and, especially, wine have a cardioprotective effect if they are taken in moderation.
Recently some articles have been published about the cardioprotective substances in wine. On one hand, its alcohol content will cause vasodilatation and other effects on fibrinolysis, but there are other substances that will facilitate thrombus fibrinolysis, thereby reducing risk of coronary heart disease.
Furthermore, epidemiological studies show that subjects who consume alcohol in moderation have lower cardiovascular risk. But moderate wine consumers have even less risk of developing these diseases.
On the other hand, excluding alcohol, heart-healthy components of wine are in their precursors: grapes and grape juice. Some of them are also present in cranberry and cocoa. This leads to the conclusion that taking alcohol is not necessary to benefit from these compounds.
