Abstract

Outpatient nursing professionals face complex situations and must be able to understand correctly the problems and try to solve them. They use different types of knowledge: explicit knowledge (theory), implicit knowledge (experience), as well as intuitive knowledge, mostly used by experts.
The aim of this paper is to explore the thought process of outpatient nursing professionals when they are working and address some of the foundations on which they base their decisions. It describes the stages proposed by Dreyfus and Dreyfus from a novice professional until they become an expert. It describes the importance of emotions on experiential learning and its great influence to help make better decisions and avoid repeating mistakes.
