Abstract

Objective: Evaluation of a treatment program of workplace violence (WPV), conducted in a group of nurses from different centers (primary care, hospitals, etc.) in the province of Valencia. The treatment program was presented as a program to prevent and provide guidelines for dealing with WPV, achieving a positive work environment that improves nurses’ quality of life.
Methods: Thirty nurses participated with a mean age of 34.4 years. The treatment program is based on the same assumptions that are taken into account in the Kauris’ Method. It consisted in approximately 60 minute sessions. To assess the level of WPV, before and after the program, we used the harassment at work strategies questionnaire (LIPT-60).
Results: Of the 30 nurses, none had experienced physical violence or discrimination. Analyzing the overall index of bullying and the dimensions of psychological harassment in the initial session, thirteen nurses had a high chance of experimenting psychological harassment and therefore, of developing a psychopathology. After the treatment program only six had high a probability of psychological harassment.
Conclusions: The program had an effect on the attitude of nurses towards WPV, helped them to be aware of all forms of WPV and to consider the resources available to address it. Efficacy has been demonstrated by a decrease in the number of nurses with psychological harassment.
