Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of attending the nursing session, taught within the program of preparation for parenthood, to increase the initiation and duration of EBF.
Methods: Prospective cohort study.
A cohort of primiparous women attending the breastfeeding session, within the program of preparation for parenthood, compared to another cohort of primiparous women who will not attend the nursing session, and compare rates of EBF regarding the initiation and duration thereof. 339 women will be recruited in the first group and 111 in the second.
The inclusion of pregnant women will take place in the primary care midwife’s rooms. The recruitment period will begin in September 2012 and end in May 2013.
Scientific and social and health relevance of study: Literature review shows that feeding infants should not be considered a lifestyle choice, but rather, as a basic health issue. Thus the role of the midwife in the appropriate support to breastfeeding is essential to achieve this public health goal.
