Abstract

An interventional study was carried out in a group of 36 pregnant women in Family Medicine Clinics 4, 5, 7, and 8 at "José Martí" Polyclinic, Gibara, Cuba, from March 2011 to April 2012, in order to evaluate an educational program on breastfeeding. Pregnant women’ knowledge was assessed before and after completing the intervention. Age, number of children, person providing information, years of education, breastfeeding appropriate duration based on women' beliefs, responsibility for breastfeeding, reasons for discontinuation, and breastfeeding advantages were recorded. After obtaining a previous informed consent, data were harvested from individual medical records and from questionnaires filled by the women. Educational program activities included lectures, workshops, videos, and learning games; twice-weekly 2-hour sessions were used for each group of participants. Predominant group characteristics were as follows: 20 to 24-year-old women, no previous child, pre-university education, information provided by relatives. Mothers' knowledge was considered to be "inadequate" before intervention and "adequate" after intervention, with a high statistical significance based on a variation coefficient method. Educational intervention was considered to be effective.
