Abstract

Bullous pemphigus is an acquired autoimmune disease, due to antibodies targeted to the skin basement membrane. Clinical features include cutaneous blisters.
Therapy aims at suppressing clinical signs of bullous pemphigus to a level the patient is able to tolerate (reduced blister development and skin healing).
Steroid systemic treatment efficacy has been shown in non-controlled clinical studies and is well established in clinical practice. Topical steroids can be usefully combined with systemic therapy.
A case study is presented. A 93-year-old woman with bullous pemphigus had skin lesions due to the disease.
A nursing care plan was developed, including outcomes criteria and nursing interventions.
Nursing staff has a significant role in early lesion recognition and must have a good knowledge of recently developed strategies for bullous pemphigus therapy and appropriate measures to promote healing.
