Abstract

Competence acquisition and assessment is a key factor in the current educational model for Grade-level education in Spain. "Criticism and self-criticism capacity" is an important generic interpersonal competence in Nursing Grade curriculum. A course on Health Communicative and Educational Skills is included in the 3rd year curriculum for Nursing Grade at the Universidad Europea de Madrid. It is aimed at developing this competence at an intermediate level by means of a number of teaching and assessment tools. Based on the results of year 2011-12 findings, a change in assessment system was put forward. Year 2012-13 results were compared with those of previous year.

The new system results in a significantly increased rate of students avoiding to consider external criteria such as the way their assessment influences others' grades. However, a paradoxically decreased rate of students that use only the established assessment criteria and are aware of a criticism and self-criticism capacity development was observed.
