Abstract

Purpose: To analyze the effect of physical activity on weight gain over pregnancy and weight retention after childbirth.

Material and methods: A descriptive longitudinal analysis in a sample consisting of 133 women. Data on physical activity and weight course during pregnancy and postpartum were collected.

Results: Mean weight gain during pregnancy was close to 14 kg and weight retention three months after childbirth was about 5 kg. No statistically significant relationship was observed between weight changes and physical activity.

Conclusions: The extent of physical activity effectiveness in controlling gestational weight gain and weight retention after childbirth is not clear. Further studies are warranted to elucidate such an association.
