Abstract

Introduction: in recent years, there has been an increase in the need for improving patient safety, since it was revealed that there was a high frequency of adverse events (AEs) caused by patient care.
Objective: to identify the different methodologies used at the time of analyzing adverse events in obstetric care, for the systematic detection of the error that is causing them; and to reduce those defined as preventable, thus improving the safety of pregnant women.
Method: a narrative review of those articles published in Spanish and English between January, 2009 and January, 2018 in the following secondary bibliographic databases: PubMed, Cochrane, Elsevier and MEDES.
Results: fifteen (15) bibliographic references have been considered of interest, meeting the inclusion criteria.  
Conclusions: cross-sectional, case-control, and by cohorts (both prospective and retrospective) methodologies are typically used.
