Abstract
An epileptic seizure is defined as a clinical manifestation resulting from excessive and hypersynchronous neuronal firing which is self-limited. Clinical features vary according to the brain area affected by the seizure, and may result in sensitive, psychic, or motor manifestations.
In women, pregnancy entails physical changes that may lead to the activation of previously existing medical conditions or to the decompensation of diseases. In pregnant women, epilepsy ranks second in frequency among the neurological disorders, affecting up to 1% of women in childbearing age. Epilepsy increases maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.
The current literature review aims at providing an update on the management of women diagnosed with epilepsy during pregnancy, with special emphasis on the correct management of the disease from preconception to lactation.
