Abstract

The present work aims to report a contemporary overview on available induction methods, including their indications, adverse effects and routes for administration. Bishop test value as a prognostic test for vaginal delivery should be highlighted. Available drug methods are reviewed, and prostaglandins E2 and emerging use of prostaglandin E1 or misoprostol is emphasized. Alternative non-pharmacological methods, such us the use of a Foley catheter for outpatient cervix ripening, are also reported. Finally, several examples of protocols for each procedure and a final section on special scenarios are included.
