Abstract

Introduction: induced breastfeeding is a process through which a non-pregnant mother can be able to breastfeed a child. There are different methods to achieve this, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.

Objective: the objective of this bibliographic review was to evaluate the different methods used to induce breastfeeding, as well as the experiences of the mothers who participated in the process.

Method: a search was conducted in different databases, in order to select studies which referred to breastfeeding induction methods and/or the experiences of women who underwent these. The final review included 13 articles in total.

Results: in the majority of cases, pharmacological methods were used for milk production, although breast stimulation seemed to be essential during the process of milk induction.

Conclusion: it is necessary to improve the knowledge of healthcare professionals regarding the induction methods and their adaptation to each case. But to this aim, a more standardized knowledge about the matter would be required.
