Abstract

Introduction: simulation has been integrated into medical training for many centuries. In the 21st century it has experienced an impressive technological development, which has turned it into a potent pedagogical tool both for the training of future professionals and for the continuous training of the staff in active employment. The practical teaching of obstetrics through simulation has been implemented in our unit; we are convinced that it can increase the confidence and security in management for students, by working in a “safe environment” at the start of their learning, knowing that their mistakes will not have an adverse effect on the safety of women in their processes of care. Objectives: the primary objective of this activity is to integrate training with a high-technology simulator into the learning programs for obstetric gynaecological nursing (midwife) residents. Secondarily, to understand the level of satisfaction among students with their training practice, and the assessment by instructors of the level of competencies and skills achieved for the resolution of the cases proposed and other teamwork factors. Materials and method: a high-fidelity maternal and neonatal manikin (Victoria S 2200 Simulator) with software to control the simulator and pre-programmed (maternal-foetal) scenarios. An individual recording system for subsequent viewing and training and resolution feedback. Design of the training program with a proposal of simulation in different obstetric scenarios. Pre-briefing and debriefing as training evaluation tools. Results: the assessment by those residents participating in the virtual simulation course on obstetric care has been highly positive from an emotional point of view, as well as in the achievement of technical and non-technical skills. Conclusions: the assessment by students supports that virtual training with the “Victoria” simulator in this hospital achieves the objective of improving their training, it increases the quality, involvement and motivation of residents in their training, it reduces the fear and anxiety during the first stages of care practice, and creates a better organizational environment, higher confidence among professionals, and a safer staging of real scenarios for women being cared for. Summing up, it increases the quality of care offered to women throughout their birthing process.
