Abstract

Introduction: midwives are contributing to the promotion and prevention of maternal and fetal morbimortality before, during and after delivery. Pregnancy planning is an ideal moment to encourage changes in behaviour oriented towards healthier habits. The contents of preconception consultations must adapt to the specific circumstances of each woman and family, in order to achieve not only the objective of pregnancy, but also the best health results both for the mother and the fetus, through health education as a pathway to promote the health of the parents, which will also have impact on their future descendants. Objective: to collect, analyse and describe the opinion of women anonymously through a survey on the knowledge of preconception care available from their Primary Care (PC) midwife. Materials and Method: a descriptive cross-sectional non-experimental anonymous study on the knowledge of women about basic preconception care at their PC midwife practice. Results: the participants in this anonymous survey were 67 pregnant women with children under 6 months of age within 30 days. Of those women surveyed, 26.86% had attended a preconception consultation by their midwife before looking for pregnancy; and 74.62% of women had visited their midwife on some occasion previous to pregnancy. Conclusions: the midwife is the main person of reference for the sexual and reproductive life of women and their families. Midwives play a key role in health education and health promotion through different preventive, behavioural and therapeutic activities of care, within their competences. Preconception consultations have demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of complications in women and their children and, therefore, these must be included in the portfolio of services by the midwife, and awareness must be generated among women (and men) about this healthcare service provided by midwives.
