Abstract

The massive arrival of immigrants to our country represents an enormous demographic, social and cultural change and required some degree of reflection on the delivery of care given to patients who have a different cultural background to ours. The paper herein presented attempts to provide some thought on socio-cultural aspects that influence health and disease, and their repercussion on nursing delivery and nursing care. The first question is which model of care would be the most appropriate to cover these care needs and demand. Next, we will first identify a series of cultural phenomena language, temporary orientation, personal space and territoriality) that affect health. Lastly, we will point out other aspects such as social organisation, rootlessness and social exclusion that are a hindrance to the health of immigrants, making them vulnerable from a healthcare point of view.
