Abstract
When one suffers from a serious, invalidating or terminal illness, there is usually a person nearby from the family network or a friend that without realising it becomes the supporter of the person afflicted with the condition. The supporter is the figure that supports the patient emotionally, sharing the immense emotional world of a beloved person with a serious and/or terminal illness. The supporter is the person that helps the patient to die trying to help the patient live his or her last stage of life. The role of the supporter is related more with the aspects of help and emotional support in facing the disease than with the physical aspects of the patient’s care. This article herein presented focuses more specifically on the development of this role of “support person or supporter” than on the role of the main carer, whether it is shared or not by the same individual, and presents a proposal for nursing intervention aimed at these individuals.
