Abstract
Healthcare personnel in general, and particularly, Nursing personnel, is always exposed to skin punctures, such as with needle pricks, scratches and cuts, with a serious risk of contracting serious blood transmitted diseases. It has been demonstrated that the use of safety catheters reduces the accidental rate of skin punctures by 80 to 87%. Because of this, the use of safety catheters incorporating prevention systems must be adopted as a matter of urgency in hospitals centres so as to minimise injuries caused by this type of accident. The Directorate of Nursing at Hospital Universitario Dr. Josep Trueta, in Girona, has made it possible to test two types of safety catheters, comparing the advantages and drawbacks of both systems.
