Abstract

Objective: to assess the healthcare quality perceived by women who had had a mammography at the Speciality Centre of Argüelles in Madrid.
Method: qualitative study based on focal groups with women aged 42 to 64 years. Semi-structured interviews were administered, which included the dimensions of the SERVQUAL model. The interviews were recorded and transcribed literally. The Interview contents were analysed using the Giorgi method (1997).
Results: women felt satisfied with the attention they received at the Mammography Unit. However, they were dissatisfied with the process of gynaecological attention they received, mainly, the care provided by the specialist, long waiting list, delay in getting the results of the diagnostic tests and breast discomfort. There are differences in the evaluation of the quality of healthcare received by women in rural as compared to urban areas.
Conclusions: measures need to be introduced to improve the process of the care provided in gynaecological check ups, with the aim of correcting the deficiencies observed in the Access to specialised care. These measures would include shortening of waiting lists, bringing the specialist closer to the rural setting, adapting a gynaecological consultation room that is appropriate to carry out the explorations, and decreasing the waiting time to get the results of diagnostic tests.
