Abstract
There is current consensus in that the documentation needed in the decision making process present in the nursing process is essential to improve the quality of nursing care, manage resources, investigate on the improvement of care or in the training of future professionals. The search for more efficient documentation systems has prompted the development of tools such as nursing language taxonomies, standardised nursing plans and IT applications. Nonetheless, despite the unquestionable benefit derived from these technological advances, we are observing risks derived from their inadequate use and hence some serious consideration is called upon to avoid such risks.
The objective of this paper is to show inaccuracies identified in the diagnostic nursing process and to point out the consequences of these inaccuracies for the person receiving the care, for the profession and the nursing discipline. Possible explanations to the occurrence of these inaccuracies are examined based on the questioning of the adequation of tools and the meaning nurses give to their utilisation.
Finally, the paper concludes that the potential benefit of technology is directly dependent on how and for what purpose such technology is used, as it can easily turn into something harmful and perverse when its mastery is in itself a goal. Thus, competency in the management of technology should also include the mastery of the diagnostic reasoning process and the development of a critical thinking process.
