Abstract
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of unknown aetiology that is characterised mainly by widespread pain lasting more than 3 months, not of a joint origin, fatigue and sleep disturbances with no identifiable organic alterations. In our setting it has a prevalence of 2,37% and the affected female-male ratio is 20:1. It is a complex syndrome that is associated with a sharp reduction of quality of life and physical function.
Nursing care for this complex pathology can be very important to facilitate self-care, self-efficacy and an effective coping with the disease, and should be focused on structured programs aimed specifically at these patients, based on pain reduction, the promotion of physical exercise and behavioural therapy techniques.
This article, the ninth and last of a series aimed at rheumatology nursing care, presents fibromyalgia, covering the general aspects of this pathology, its clinical manifestations, the psychological, family and socioeconomic impact it has and the management of these patients’ therapeutic regimen.
