Abstract
Nursing in Spain does not raise the necessity of studying its scientific production until the first part of the 90’s. The objective of this study was to determine the place that nursing takes among sciences based on the analysis of the bibliography used by nurses to reference their articles.
A retrospective descriptional study was performed reviewing the bibliography referenced in the articles published in 16 Spanish nursing journals during 1995.
Two variables have been used to define both social and experimental characteristics of nursing:The field of knowledge according to UNESCO International Classification and the observed citation pattern.
A total of 4530 references were evaluated: 47,09% articles; 37,74%books and handbooks and 15,17% others documents. The distribution of citations according to the field of knowledge was:Psychology 431; Public Health and Preventive Medicine 324; Internal Medicine 269; Clinical Sciences 255; Life sciences 222; Sociology 216;Anthropology/Demography/ History 216.
Nursing science had an intermediate pattern between social and Experimental sciences ( Ice = 55.5% Ics = 45.5%). Social sciences hadIcs = 75.9% and Experimental sciences had Ice= 61.6%.
Nursing is an applied science acquiring its knowledge from social and experimental sciences and from its own contents. The three fields are useful for nurses to reference their articles and to develop newknowledge.
