Abstract

Delivery is one of the most principal factors affecting relaxation of muscles pelvis floor, which may cause urogenital dysfunction. An exercise program for the rehabilitation of the perineum area after delivery was carried out at hospital Santa Cruz y San Pablo. The evaluation of that program was the objective of the present study. The sample were 191 women, divided into two groups on the basis of the starting the rehabilitation program during pregnancy or post delivery. The study last from 1994 to 1996 and the design was descriptive, retrospective and quasi experimental. It was not randomized. Results: The strength of perineum muscles is decreases over pregnancy. The adherence to the program after delivery was higher in the group that began during pregnancy. In general women who performance the program exercise had more strength on pelvis floor muscles and the incidence of urinary incontinence was significantly less. Among 57 women with urinary incontinence after delivery, 54,8% were helped to deliver by forceps, 25,6% by spatula and 24,6% had normal delivery.Urinary incontinence was not observed in women with cesarean operation. Stress incontinence was the most frequent type. Women with newborns of 3,700gr or higher showed a tendency to develop urinary incontinence. Conclusion: The exercise program to perineum rehabilitation is a good method to compensate muscle relaxation caused by pregnancy and delivery as well as to control the urogenital dysfunction.
