Abstract

A scientific literature revision was made with the purpose of describingthe published experiences to quantify the effect of time on theaccuracy of arterial blood gases test results. The look up referencesshow that 30 minutes at 0º C is the maximum time permitted betweenthe blood sample is obtained and the gases analysis is done to get anaccurate determination. Delays, inappropriate refrigeration and the useof plastic syringes may impair the values obtained of gases analysis.

An improvement in coordination between hospital wards and laboratory services is desirable to decrease delays in the sample analysis.
